On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, Gateway Newcomers Pathway hosted the much-anticipated “Empowering Newcomers for Success” conference at the luxurious Ramada Hotel in Edmonton. This one-day event was designed to offer newcomers the essential resources and guidance needed to thrive in their new home, Canada. The conference brought together experts and professionals from various sectors to provide valuable insights on key areas of integration, including financial literacy, social well-being, and immigration processes.
The event began with registration and a light breakfast, offering attendees an early opportunity to network. Richmond Bonsu, the Master of Ceremonies, officially welcomed the participants, setting a warm and engaging tone for the day. The program continued with a land acknowledgment from Salila Muriu and an uplifting prayer led by Pastor Hussein Nyende. Christine Birabwa, Executive Director of Gateway Newcomers Pathway, followed with an inspiring opening address that underscored the organization’s commitment to helping newcomers succeed in Alberta.
Keynote speaker, Sharif Haji, MLA
The keynote speaker, Sharif Haji, MLA for Edmonton Decorer, delivered a powerful and motivating address titled “Navigating Your Pathway to Success.” His speech emphasized the importance of resilience and proactive engagement for newcomers adjusting to life in Alberta. Haji’s words set an optimistic tone that resonated with participants throughout the day.
A series of engaging presentations followed the keynote address. Bridgette Wilson offered an insightful talk on the challenges newcomers face, while Dr. Mukasa Michael highlighted the significance of mental and social well-being in the transition to a new country. Financial literacy expert Eva Musana provided practical advice on managing finances in Canada, and Harriet Tinka emphasized the critical need for continuous learning and adult education. The morning sessions wrapped up with immigration lawyer Kwaku Adu, who provided a comprehensive update on current immigration policies and pathways to permanent residency.
The networking lunch was another highlight, as attendees had the chance to mingle with speakers and fellow newcomers in a relaxed setting. The afternoon sessions resumed with historian Nii Koney, who delved into the complexities of identity, offering newcomers valuable perspectives on maintaining cultural heritage while integrating into Canadian society.
A unique feature of the event was the round table sessions, where attendees rotated between different discussion tables to engage directly with the speakers. These sessions allowed for a more personalized exchange of ideas on topics such as job opportunities, social services, health and wellness, finance, legalities, and pathways to success.
As the day concluded, certificates of participation were distributed, and attendees gathered for a group photo, marking the event’s success. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the wealth of information shared and the opportunity to connect with professionals who are well-versed in the newcomer experience.
